Theakstons

T&R Theakston Ltd is an independent, family brewing company founded in 1827 located in the Yorkshire Dales market town of Masham, North Yorkshire.

Robert Theakston, a farmer from the hamlet of Warthermarske, near Masham, takes the lease of the Black Bull inn in Masham in which he begins brewing ale. In 1830, the beer act encourages the proliferation of ‘ale houses’ across the country enabling Robert to expand his brewing operation. In 1840, Robert builds new brewhouse at the back of the Black Bull Inn to cope with the expanding demand for his ales. 1830, saw Robert buy Paradise fields, later to become site of the current Theakston brewhouse. Following the death of their father in 1875, Thomas and Robert Jr registered the business as T&R Theakston Ltd in 1905, and the family continue to expand and grow. Today, the company is controlled and run by direct descendants of the founder Robert Theakston, great-great grandsons, Simon, Nick, Tim and Edward Theakston.
