Panama in the Caribbean, is ideally suited to the production of superior rum, with ideal conditions for sugar cane growth, distillation and maturation in oak casks, which have an important influence on the flavour of premium rum.
A cask also features in this grizzly legend – Britain’s beloved Admiral Nelson was killed in 1805 at the battle of Trafalgar by a French sniper. His heroic status required that his remains be returned to England, so his body was preserved in a cask of spirit (probably rum, as it was part of the sailors ration on a British war ship). On its return to England the cask contained Nelsons pickled body but no spirit. Legend has it that, during the return journey, sailors made holes in the cask and drank the rum through straws, imbibing nelson’s blood in a practice now known as ‘Tapping the Admiral‘
