Customer Reviews

It's a very fine spirit but Calvados (not Clavados as mis-spelt in the information) is not French Brandy. It is French all right, and Pere Magloire comes from the Paye d'Auge area of Normandy but it is not made from grapes. It is pot distilled cider from very carefully selected apples then aged to perfection in French oak casks. The VSOP is not dark golden, it is pale golden with a delightful apple aroma and a smooooth lingering finish. The older it gets, the finer it gets and the greater the angle's share during ageing but to my taste, when it gets too old, it loses the freshness. The VSOP will have spirit up to 5 year old in the blend, the 8 and 12 year old versions are superb but very expensive. Just don't be a cretin and use it in cocktails or over ice. Use the cheaper patent-still produced Calvados Appelation Controlee for that! If you're serving a heavy meal, a small shot of Calvados after the main course and before the cheese does wonders for the appetite. The French call this the 'trou Normande', the Normandy Hole.
