In German, 'rauch' means smoke, referring to the fact that this beer is brewed with smoked malt. 'Marzen' translates as 'March' and refers to the fact that traditionally (prior to the invention of the refrigerator) this beer could only be brewed between autumn and March, before the onset of summer bacterial infections.
