Sandeman’s Late Bottle Vintage (LBV) is created from hand picked grapes at their ideal maturation stage and then pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats under controlled temperatures and was a arrested at the optimum point by the addition of grape alcohol.
After the harvest the wine is racked for the first time over the winter months. During racking, the final corrections in the alcohol strength and acidity are carried out before the port gets taken to V.N.Gaia the following spring. Here the wine goes through the traditional port maturation process, in 640-litre casks. During this period the wine is subject to continues analysis and tasting to monitor the age and taste of the port making corrections where necessary.
The result is strong, deep, almost opaque, ruby coloured port, with a complex and very intense bouquet, consisting of mint and supported by spicy notes such as truffle and pepper. The palate shows great structure and complexity, with layers of high quality fruit and spice contributing to a very long amicable finish.
