With rum being a huge part of the West Indian lifestyle, there are variants within the quality of the product. Premium rums include Cockspur and Appleton estate. Premium rums are usually made to be consumed neat. Older isn't necessarily better; an extensive ageing process is important but depends more on the type of ageing undertaken. In general, the darker rums are usually classified as premium. Rule: they should have no added sugar at all, but 100% sugar cane. Premium luxury xo aged anejo rums are best served room temperature.
