Gin, to start with is, a white spirit, flavoured predominately with juniper berries. Originating in the Middle Ages, gin has evolved over the course of a millennium from herbal medicines, to a favoured spirit, enjoyed worldwide. In the 17th Century, gin became a product of Holland and was known as jenever. When William of Orange, leader of the Dutch Republic and his wife, Mary, occupied the English and Scottish thrones, gin became a popular drink in Great Britain and still is today. Often referred to as "mothers ruin" gin was a cheap drink, which became popular with the poor in the 1800's. Of the 15,000 drinking establishments in London, not including coffee shops and drinking chocolate shops, over half were gin shops.
