Dunkel is a German word used to describe several different types of dark lager traditionally originating from Bavaria. Dunkels are characterised by their sweet, malty flavour which is achieved through a brewing technique called 'decoration mashing'. Ranging from 4.5% to 6% in ABV, dunkels are generally weaker than Doppelbocks, another type of German dark beer.
