The Bruichladdich distillery is owned by the 3 Harvey brothers who built the distillery in 1881. The Harvey family has over a century of whisky distilling ownership in their family. The three brothers have a strong belief that the whisky industry has been stifled by industrialisation and self-interest. Companies now days try and do things the quickest way possible but at Bruichladdich they believe that taking time and using authentic equipment is the best way to make their single malts. The single malts are made from Scottish barley and when it comes to maturing the single malts, the boys at Bruichladdich use a variety of different wooded casks. These perform the vital task of allowing the evolution of the spirit by way of subtle and complex interactions between the micro-oxidation of the whiskies flavour compounds. Oak tannins extracted from the wood, the ozone-marine influence of the air absorbed through the wood and the whisky texture.
This is the fourth instalment in the Port Charlotte series and aged for 8 years. The colour is described as a chartreuse sunset with its light amber tint. On the nose you get an updraft of sea spray and peat smoke greets you with spicy pepper and lemon aromas all exploding simultaneously. Notes follow of heather and myrtle combated by oak and malted barley burst. On the palate it is viscous, rich and oily. Peat fire flavours and the mellow rich taste of sweet oaky Demerara sugar toddy instantaneously erupt on the tongue. The finish is likely to leave you feeling as macho a man could ever be, with the power of this spirit reaching deep into your taste buds.
