Lagers tend to be golden or pale in colour and should be served well chilled for maximum enjoyment. Perfect match: lightly spiced foods, red and smoked meats. A type of beer that is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures. The term "Lager" is a cognate of "ligrs", Gothic for "place of lying (down)".

The common characteristic is that lager is bottom-fermented - that is, the yeast sinks to the bottom of the fermentation container, where it carries out a slower fermentation, giving the resulting beer a clean, subtle flavour.
