Anchor Steam was first brewed in 1886 in San Francisco. Its name probably refers to a primitive method of brewing common in early California, whereby fermenting beer was left to cool naturally in the foggy night air, creating steam from the warm open pans.
To this day Anchor Steam's production continues to uphold tradition, as the beer is left to ferment in open-air fermenters before being transported to cellars to carbonate naturally.
