Ale is a type of beer brewed from malted barley using a warm-fermentation with a strain of brewers' yeast. The yeast will ferment the beer quickly, giving it a sweet, full bodied and fruity taste.

Most ales contain hops, which help preserve the beer and impart a bitter herbal flavour that balances the sweetness of the malt. Each ale has its own unique characteristic, but they are most commonly brewed in England's rich and brewing heritage and tend to be fruity, hoppy and with complex flavours. Perfect match: red meats, stews and cheese. Ale is warmer, more robust and more complex than lager.

Bitter is the English term for a pale ale. Bitters vary in colour from gold to dark amber and in strength from 3% to 8% alcohol by volume.

There are various different types of ale; Brown Ale, Pale Ale (often known as a bitter), Indian Pale Ale (IPA), Golden Ale, Scotch Ale, American Pale Ale (APA), Belgian Ale, Old Ale to name a few.
