Fortified Wine is the result of a distilled beverage being added to wine in order to create another alcoholic product. The distilled beverage is typically brandy, but can be adapted to include any spirit and therefore, has higher alcohol content than other table wines.
Fortified wines were born of the need to preserve European wines on long trade voyages during the 16th and 17th centuries. Measures of brandy were added before or during the fermentation process to stabilize the wine.
