Ilegal Mezcal came about in an informal manner back in 2004. John Rexer was importing mezcal to his bar in Antigua, Guatemala. With many mezcal's not being certified for export, clever menthods were used to bring the Mezcal across borders as more than a few bottles caused issues. Weekly trips were made to bring this delicious drink across the borders and the supplier noticed the frequency and hatched a plan.
